Designer cats What is a designer cat? Designer cat breeds are a deliberate hybrid cross between two purebred cats. A purebred cat is a cat that has been bred over many generations to breed true and have the same trait and characteristics. They all conform to a certain standard and have a known pedigree. A hybrid breed takes certain traits from both parent breeds and forms a new and unique cat breed. Designer cats are new hybrid breeds that have a combination of unique traits that make them stand out from other traditional purebred cats. They also have a standard that is written that breeders work towards and the Designer Cats also have known pedigrees to track their heritage. The main difference with the Designer Cats are that they have not yet been accepted into a major association for registration or competition in Championship categories. Most associations have a list of rules that you must go through in order to get a new breed recognized. While some organizations change the rules often making it harder, it is still possible for dedicated breeders to work towards this goal. Some registrations track these new breeds in an Experimental Registry so that records can be kept of how many kittens or litters are registered. This is to ensure that the breed is a viable breed. There are other requirements that have to be met before being allowed to advance to the next level. A certain number of kittens registered, a certain number of breeders working together across the country and the breed must pass through a genetics committee to ensure that it is a healthy breed. The Designer Cat Society was created to help promote these new designer breeds on their journey to obtaining acceptance in a major cat association. The DC Society will not promote a breed that is unhealthy or has harmful traits. | |||||||
